ST. AUGUSTINE

A man shot himself in the foot Tuesday after a snake struck at him from a pile of weeds, according to a report from the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.

The man said he was helping clear weeds from a horse pasture on Arnold Road in St. Augustine when he saw what he thought was a rattlesnake. He went to the barn to grab a .22 caliber rifle and came back for the snake.

While he was looking for the snake, it struck at him and caught him off guard, according to the report. He jumped back and pulled the trigger, accidentally discharging a live round into the top of his right foot.

The man called his father and they drove to Flagler Hospital. He was taken to Baptist Medical Center South for further treatment.
