In an effort to send Noble High School’s music students on a trip to New York City, the school is holding several fundraisers, one of which is a raffle for a six-day bear hunting trip.
There has been much opposition to allowing this raffle to take place, and Sue Austin, assistant superintendent for the School Administrative District 60 Board, is saying that she “respects” the views of those who object to schools endorsing animal killing trips as raffle prizes, but she has not taken steps to call the raffle off.
Please contact Ms. Austin and the following officials and POLITELY request that they not allow the raffle to take place:

Some points to raise in your letter:
• Schools and other public institutions should not be involved with sending people on hunting trips. It is not the place of the school system to portray violence toward wildlife as recreation.
• The school could open itself up for civil charges being filed against it if someone is injured or killed during the hunting trip.
• Rather than raffling off hunting trips, wildlife-related fundraisers could focus on activities such as camping, hiking, or wildlife watching/photographing.
• The school system should support and encourage the hobby of Wildlife Watching – an activity that has grown in popularity among Maine residents by 35% over the past decade and is more popular in the state than hunting and fishing combined (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, State Overview, Issued July 2007)
Please remember – your letters, e-mails and/or phone calls should be POLITE and RESPECTFUL at all times if we are to be effective in our efforts to stop this raffle from taking place. Pro-hunting organizations are supporting this raffle in an organized way, and we must counter their efforts to spread the cancer of hunting to school children.
Please send C.A.S.H. a copy of your correspondence – we would love to hear from you.
