A man was killed Sunday evening in Muskingum County, near the conclusion of Ohio’s new antlerless-only deer muzzleloader hunt. He died of an apparently accidental self-inflicted gunshot.

The middle-aged man, whose name had not been disclosed by officials as of yesterday afternoon, was hunting alone on private property off Wolf Run Road east of Zanesville, said Mark Bruce, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, which is investigating the incident.

Muskingum County Sheriff Matt Lutz said there were two guns — a muzzleloader and a shotgun — in the vehicle that the man was using. The shotgun apparently discharged accidentally, Lutz said.
