A Belt-area youth is recovering from a gunshot injury to his left ankle suffered during a hunting trip late Tuesday afternoon. Capt. Ray Hitchcock from the Cascade County Sheriff’s Office described the young man’s injury as “self-inflicted and accidental.”

“A young lad was out bird hunting and discharged his firearm in excitement when a bird came up and hit himself,” Hitchcock said. “The last briefing I had reported the boy is stable and is going to be transported by Mercy Flight into the hospital for an injury to the left ankle. The injury is very recoverable from what I am to understand.”

The victim’s identity is being withheld due to his age.
