Hingham police have filed criminal complaints against three men who they say were illegally hunting on conservation land.

Sgt. Steven Dearth said an off-duty officer found the three men Friday wearing hunting gear and holding shotguns in More-Brewer Park, a 106-acre conservation property off Old Hobart Street.

They will face charges of firing a gun within 500 feet of a building and violating a town bylaw that prohibits the use of firearms on public property.

The hunters are a 28-year-old man from Braintree and a 40-year-old and a 25-year-old from Weymouth.

An officer heard gunshots and went into the woods to see where they came from. When the officer found the men holding shotguns, they told him they were hunting deer. The men were about 281 feet from a nearby home when they fired the shotguns.
