After illegally duck hunting in the morning, Mark and Michelle Tarver paddled their canoe into Bayou Nezpique before losing control due to fast-moving water. After being ejected from the canoe, the couple swam to the bank but were unable to climb the steep bluff.

The Tarvers were treated for severe hypothermia and transported to the Savoy Medical Center in Mamou for further treatment. They are expected to make a full recovery, according to the report.

Agents said the Tarvers admitted to having been duck hunting, and had harvested two ducks. Bayou Nezpique, which is on the Evangeline and Allen parish line, is in the state’s Coastal Zone, which is currently closed to duck hunting.

Hunting ducks during a closed season brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to
120 days in jail.
