Matthew Tyler Webb, 23, is charged with with discharging a firearm within 150 feet of a roadway. He wounded his girlfriend while trying to shoot a deer. Officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, which is handling the investigation, said more charges may follow next week.

A Georgia woman decided to surprise her boyfriend on an impromptu hunting trip and was accidentally shot in the leg after being mistaken for a deer.

Police in Lafayette Ga., arrested Matthew Tyler Webb, 23, after he alleged fired his gun Thursday night into a wooded area, striking his girlfriend Audrey Mayo, 24, according to the Times Free Press.

The couple were hanging out on the roof of Webb’s home when he told police he saw a pack of deer traveling through the woods and decided to hunt them, the newspaper reported. At first, Mayo said she wanted to stay back but later decided to join him.

Webb heard a noise in the woods and fired his rifle, the newspaper reported.
When he heard Mayo scream he rushed over and tried to wrap his jacket around her wounded leg

Mayo passed out at the scene and was transported to a local hospital where she is listed in critical but stable condition, the newspaper reported.
