An 81-year-old hunter waiting for a pesky raccoon that had been scratching at his door for several days accidentally shot himself when he sneezed and fell off his chair, police said today.

James Pace Sr. was sitting outside his home in New Haven, Connecticut, Saturday with a .22 rifle when the accident occurred, according to authorities.

Mr Pace said he was planning to shoot a raccoon that had been scratching at his back door for the last several days.

He loaded his gun and was waiting for the rodent to cross his property again when he sneezed.

Somehow, the weapon discharged into Mr Pace’s leg and he fell off his chair.
