Chris Ayres took his dog and rifle into the Lytle Creek wilderness north of Fontana on Nov. 9 in search of deer, but instead became a target himself.

The 45-year-old Rialto is recovering from a gunshot wound to his leg and arm. Law enforcement officers aren’t sure if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

About 3:30 p.m. he began hearing a series of gunshots while standing on a ridge. He thought a hunter might be trying to spook wildlife out of cover.
Then he realized the bullets were coming straight at him.

After 15 to 20 shots, a bullet struck his leg, piercing his buttocks and an arm.
